Welcome Letter to Freshmen
at Department of Foreign Languages and Literature

Dear Incoming Students,

Welcome to FLLD at Tunghai University! You are joining an exciting and challenging program that will provide an education to help you meet the expectations and opportunities you will encounter in your career and throughout your life. It is our hope that your study at FLLD will prove to be fruitful and delightful.

FLLD punches above its weight in terms of teaching accomplishment, research distinction, and across-disciplinary internship. Many of my colleagues in FLLD have won university-wide teaching awards, and we are also widely published scholars in our areas of expertise, with national and international audiences. We seek to share the excitement of being lovers of languages and culture with students.

Studying in this department means much face time with faculty members, which is great for learning and practice. Teachers at this department create classroom atmospheres that you feel motivated to learn more and aim high. The interactions make it possible for us to identify and help students who are struggling, and to push students who are thriving to achieve more than they ever imagined.

本系介紹

1955年東海大學創校即成立系所之一，本系著重於大學部英語課程、碩士班英語教學訓練及英美文學課程，統籌全校第二外語課程（西文/法文/德文）。東海外文系的優良傳統為小班制英語教學全英語授課環境，讓大學部及碩士班學生能提升口語表達技巧。

The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature (FLLD) was one of the original departments of Tunghai University, established in 1955. At present, the Department focuses on undergraduate courses for Foreign Language majors; with MA courses in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and English/American Literature; and language courses in Spanish, French, and German for all Tunghai students.

Tunghai FLLD’s unique tradition mandates small classes taught in English, and teacher-student relationships providing students with plenty of individual attention. In its long history, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature has cultivated many well-educated students who are at the forefront in their fields. As one of Tunghai’s founding departments, the FLLD remains committed to Tunghai’s motto to be “A University with a Pioneering Spirit.”
